Community Based Day Supports (CBDS) Program

Important Information for Applicants to Island Autism’s CBDS Program

Island Autism is a young and growing organization dedicated to supporting as many Island residents as possible through compassionate, individualized services. Our team is made up of caring, well-trained professionals who are deeply committed to our mission. However, as a newer organization, we are still growing our capacity—and with that newness comes certain limitations.

We are equipped to support individuals who meet specific criteria, but we are not yet able to accommodate every type of need without compromising the quality of care and programming for the entire community. Transparency about our current capabilities is key to ensuring the best experience for everyone we serve.

Residential Program Availability

Please note that our residential program has extremely limited availability. Acceptance into our Community-Based Day Services (CBDS) program does not guarantee a spot in the residential program. If you are in need of a residential placement, we strongly encourage you to continue exploring all appropriate options and not defer other promising opportunities. We currently have only eight residential placements available for individuals with intensive needs, and we anticipate high interest. We hope to begin the review process for these placements in the fall of 2025.

By continuing with the application process, you acknowledge that you have read and understood the statement above.

A Personal Note
As a parent of an adult child with intense needs, I understand firsthand how challenging it is to find the right place—a place where your loved one is not only supported, but truly seen and valued.

Island Autism Entrance Criteria For CBDS

Island Autism is a private instructional program for adults with licensing in the Community Based Day Supports for the Department of Developmental Disabilities designed specifically for Adults with Autism and Autism-related disorders. Our program is structured around movement, vestibular stimulation, and individualized support. To ensure that each person benefits from our specialized environment, applicants must meet the following entrance criteria:

Eligibility Criteria

  • Classification: Must be eligible for an educational disability classification of Autism and Intellectual Disabilities.
  • Cognitive Profile: Demonstrates borderline to average intelligence, with identifiable strengths and weaknesses.
  • Language and Communication: Exhibits language and communication deficits requiring support.
  • Social Functioning: Needs assistance with social interaction and development.
  • Behavioral Profile: May present behavioral challenges commonly associated with Autism and sensory processing difficulties.

Referral Process

  • Referrals may be initiated by the student’s school district or directly by parents/guardians.
  • All prospective families are required to complete an initial inquiry form.

Application and Admissions Process

  1. Upon review of the inquiry form and confirmation of eligibility, Island Autism will provide a link to the full application.
  2. Once the application is submitted, the Admissions Committee will assess the child’s suitability for the program.
  3. In some cases, a meeting and screening session may be scheduled to further evaluate fit.
  4. If tuition assistance is needed, families may request financial aid. The Admissions Committee will determine eligibility for scholarship support based on demonstrated need.
  5. Families will be notified of the final admissions decision.
  6. In instances where a program group is at capacity, qualified applicants may be placed on a waitlist.

Island Autism reserves the right to decline admission to any applicant who does not meet the entrance criteria or for whom the program is not deemed an appropriate fit. Our priority is to ensure each child’s safety, growth, and success in our unique setting.
